One more Bangladeshi intruder arrested; BSF sends ‘protest note’ to BGB

CorrespondentShillong, Aug 10

One more Bangladeshi intruder, who was part of the eight to nine men armed men who sneaked into India on August 7, has been arrested on Sunday morning in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district, taking the total number of such arrest to five, an official said.
The BSF has handed over a “protest note” to their Bangladeshi counterparts BGB regarding the intrusion of these eight to nine Bangladeshi nationals.
A security official said that the fifth Bangladeshi national identified Mubarak Hussain was spotted by the vigilant border villagers hiding in the forested area at Gilagora village and was assaulted by villagers.
Later, BSF and Meghalaya Police took custody of Hussain. Hossain is now admitted in hospital to nurse his injuries.
Out of the five nabbed, Marufur Rahman, Mefus Rahman, Jangir Along and Saem Hussain, police said Marufur and Hussain are admitted in Shillong Civil hospital and Ranikor Community Health Centre.
Police said that the Court has remanded Marufur, Mefus, Jangir and Saem to three days police custody.
These five were part of about nine Bangladeshis who entered into India on the intervening night of August 7 and 8, and stabbed a villager at Rongdongai village in South West Khasi Hills district.
Security officials said that a joint operation along with the Meghalaya Police is still on to hunt down the other intruders whom they suspected that they are still holed up in the forested areas. “We are still searching for three to four more Bangladeshi infiltrators,” Banraplang Jyrwa, the district police chief of South West Khasi Hills, said.
However, security agencies are yet to ascertain the motive of these intruders, even as one of the intruders told security officials that he was hunting geckos, and three others said they were members of the Awami League, and they wanted to take refuge in India. But BSF officials termed their claims as an alibi. “Once they are interrogated, we will be able to find out their motive and ascertain their background,” a BSF official said.
Police have seized several items including an identity card of a Bangladesh police constable, handcuff, a magazine cover, a pistol holster, radio communication sets, mobile phones, face mask, axe, wire cutter, Bangladeshi currency and a chemical substance.
Officials said, the chemical substance inside a packet has raised concern and curiosity. The chemicals are from a company based in Jessore, Bangladesh.
“We are trying to find out who these individuals are, especially the ID of the Bangladesh police constable,” an official source said.
In a separate incident along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, troopers of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday fired blank rounds to chase away the Bangladesh nationals trying to infiltrate into India through Sonatala area.
