Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) advisor Rosemary Dzüvichü alleged that she received a death threat via social media in connection with her advocacy for women’s reservation in Nagaland.
Speaking to Nagaland Post Wednesday, Dzüvichü informed she has lodged a complaint with the SP Cyber Crime Police, and that the matter was currently under investigation. She also expressed concern over the continued prevalence of threats and intimidation, saying, “Such a culture still exists in a civilised society.”
According to Dzüvichü the threat on her life was posted online through a Naga Facebook group that warned her and other ‘young and old feminists’ who have stood for women reservation. The NMA advisor also disclosed that she had endured similar threats over the years while advocating for women’s reservation during elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
Referring to recent elections, Dzüvichü said the fact that over 100 women now hold seats in ULBs in the state was testimony to their constitutional rights which was upheld by the ruling of the Supreme Court,
Dzüvichü emphasised that women’s rights are human rights and that intimidation would not silence Naga women. “Killing me with a bullet will not stop Naga women articulating about their rights,” she added.
It may be mentioned that People’s Union for Civil Liberty(PUCL) has also written to Nagaland chief secretary to take cognizance of the content in the social media ‘Unified Nagaland For Christ’ and take action against the individuals who issued the threats on her life.
NPF condemns: Meanwhile, Naga People’s Front (NPF) through its Press Bureau NPF Central HQ: Kohima, has strongly condemned the death threat and derogatory remarks posted against Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichu, women’s leader and adviser NMA.
NPF described the threat as cowardly and also a direct assault on the dignity of Naga women and democratic values. NPF said such behaviour was not only morally unacceptable but also constituted a criminal offence under the IPC and IT Act, which prohibit online harassment, threats and hate speech.
Urging the state government, law enforcement agencies and cyber crime police to take swift action, NPF called for tracing the origin of the posts, registering an FIR without delay, prosecuting those responsible, and ensuring adequate protection for Dr. Dzüvichu and other women activists facing intimidation.
It warned that allowing such criminal intimidation to go unchecked would embolden those seeking to silence women’s voices and undermine progress in Nagaland.
The party expressed full solidarity with Dr. Dzüvichu and NMA and asserted that such cowardly acts would never dampen the collective spirit for justice and equality.
