
In its continued effort to foster sustainable green environment, the Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission joined in observation of world environment day on “ecosystem restoration” (2021-2030) on June 5.
NSRLM stated that with about 90 % of the rural population of the state being dependent on forest and its natural resources, it was important to stress on protecting and enhancing the state’s rich biodiversity.
In this backdrop, notwithstanding the COVID-19 pandemic, the SHGs in coordination with the village functionaries continued to bring together the communities towards the annual world environment day celebration to preserve and enhance natural ecosystems, their biodiversity and focus on pressing environmental issues in the respective villages.
In coordination with the village council, student, teachers and Church leaders, the self help group members from 1245 villages across state actively engaged the communities in the event.
From carrying out major cleanliness drive at the village, reviving and renovating old water ways, clearing water ways to ensure safe drinking water for the community, collecting waste including plastic waste for dumping at the designated area, hundreds of tree plantation drive, clearing pipelines to planting flowers along the village road.
In consonance with the motto of NSRLM “empowering women, transforming lives” and echoing the tenets of the global world environment initiatives, SHGs pledged to build on and scale in fostering the protection and enhancing of their environment throughout the year.
RD deptt conducts plantation drive
A tree plantation drive was organised with the initiative of rural development department in every VDBs under MGNREGA on world environment day.
On the occasion, commissioner MGNREGA, Neposo Theluo directed the villages to observe WED by planting trees specially fruit bearing trees which would give environmental as well as economical benefits to the people.
In the context of Nagaland, he said, the people could contribute their best towards restoration of the ecosystem by planting trees.
This can only be achieved by people actively participating in tree plantation during this planting season as almost every villages have tree plantation in their Labour Budget under MGNREGA for the current financial year.
Online poster, essay competition
Wokha forest division and Doyang plantation division organised online competition for poster and essay on world environment day.
The topic for the competitions were “innovations on restoration of ecosystems in Nagaland” for essay competition in the senior category (class XI and above), and “environment conservation” for poster competition in the junior category (class X and below).
The winners were awared with certificates and prizes on June 7.
