Organisations condemn alleged rape of minor girl in Dimapur

Various organisations including Dimapur Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union, Sangtam Students’ Union Dimapur, Chang Students’ Union Dimapur, Yimchungrii Students’ Union Dimapur and Dimapur Phom Students’ Union, Konyak Students’ Union Dimapur, Khiamniungan Students’ Union Dimapur have strongly condemned the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl by a 55 year-old man, permanent resident of Tening under Peren district and presently residing at Half Nagarjan, Dimapur on March 19 evening.

DENSU: In a press release, DENSU president Bendangnuken stated that the accused person did not deserve to be in a society and demanded that deterrent punishment be awarded to the accused. 

Asserting that such inhumane act must be rejected by all right-thinking individuals, the union urged the law enforcing agency to probe into the matter. It also appealed to court not to grant bail to the accused, but to expedite the proceedings so justice was not delayed. DENSU warned that if the accused is released on bail before or at the time of trial, then the State  shall be held solely responsible if any untoward incident happened to the accused or the victim and family.

SSUD: Condemning the “ghastly act”, the Sangtam Students’ Union Dimapur (SSUD) called upon the law enforcing agencies to provide swift trial and justice to the minor and her family at the earliest.

SSUD through its media cell expressed concern over the rise of criminal sexual offences against minor in the state, which it claimed “frequently get resolved even without reaching the police through compromise.” The union has urged those victims and their families to have “faith in the law and with courage give an opportunity for the ‘rule of law’ to occur in our land.” It said that the minor was denied justice when she or he was withheld of legal justice by her or his own families through “compromise”. “This will later mentally affect her or him leading to an unstable future for the minor,” SSUD said and called for standing for the right and not be carried away by compromise “when it is a matter such as this.”

CSUD: Expressing shock over the alleged rape of a minor girl, the Chang Students’ Union Dimapur (CSUD) affirmed that it would no longer condone “such heinous crime committed upon our fellow sister”.

Describing the act as “barbaric and inhumane”, the union demanded the higher authority to leave no stone unturned in delivering justice to the victim. 

Further, CSUD strongly appealed to the law enforcing agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that the accused was brought to book under the rule of the law. It also expressed solidarity and extended sympathy to the victim and her family. 

YSUD: Yimchungrü Students’ Union Dimapur (YSUD) expressed deep shock over the alleged rape incident and said that it strongly “condemns this evil and inhuman act committed against a minor and innocent girl.” 

In a press release, YSUD president Mukamchem T Yimchunger and general secretary Sorito K Yimchunger said it was because of “criminals” like the accused why women in society live in “trepidation and apprehension.” “Such criminals should be punished as per law so that it act as a deterrent to others would-be offenders,” YSUD stated.

The union has expressed firm belief that the law enforcing agencies would deliver quick justice to the innocent victim and her family.

DPSU: Strongly condemning the “inhuman and heinous act” of rape, the Dimapur Phom Students’ Union (DPSU) has appealed to the law enforcing agency to award the severest punishment to the accused as per the law and demanded that justice be provided to the victim. 

In a press release, DPSU president Y. Enyuh Phom and secretary Bauom Phom said it was a matter of concern that such crimes have been increasing day by day, adding that the criminals seemed to have no fear of the law. “Such criminals should be dealt with the law which doesn’t happen usually due to non-cooperation of the victims party which often result in a rise in such crimes,” DPSU stated.

KSUD: Expressing pain and concern over the alleged rape incident, the Konyak Students’ Union Dimapur (KSUD) said that it was “disturbed and disheartened that such kind of criminal minded people still exists in our land.” 

In a press release, KSUD president Wangwan Konyak said “this inhuman activity” had no place in a civilized society, adding that such act should be condemned by every rightful citizen.

The union has urged the competent authority to investigate the case and award befitting punishment to the accused under relevant laws and serve justice. KSUD also expressed solidarity and extended sympathy to victim and her family.

KSUD: Strongly condemning alleged rape of minor girl, the Khiamniungan Students’ Union Dimapur (KSUD) Khiamniungan Students’ Union Dimapur said that the incident occurred at a time when people were longing for peace and harmony. 

In a press release, KSUD president K Buche Khiamniungan and secretary PL Chongsop said that “such act of barbarism destroys the social fabric of peace in our society”, adding that such acts cannot be tolerated in a modem civilized society. It has urged all the right-thinking citizens to condemn such heinous deeds and crime. 

Further, the union also urged the law enforcing authority to initiate thorough investigation and award befitting punishment to the accused as per the provision of the law. It also extended sincere sympathy to the victim and her family.
