Orientation on new criminal laws

DIMAPUR

A one-day orientation programme on new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—was held for Panel/Retainer and LADCS lawyers at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on June 19.
According to DIPR report, the event was organised by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA).
Speaking at the programme, Justice Y Longkumer of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, said the legal system was undergoing major reforms with the introduction of these laws, replacing the IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act. She stressed that these were not just minor changes but a shift in how justice would be delivered in India.
Justice Longkumer urged lawyers to adapt with professionalism and take up their role as educators and counsellors for the public. She highlighted challenges such as relearning legal principles but also termed it an opportunity to improve access to justice.
She encouraged attendees to understand the new features of BNS including re-classified offences, new punishments like community service, and modernized evidence rules under BSA, including digital evidence. She called for stronger engagement and commitment to justice.
NSLSA member secretary, Neiko Akami, delivered the welcome address and said the training was aimed at strengthening legal aid services.
The programme was chaired by NSLSA Retainer Lawyer, Apila Sangtam, and included technical sessions led by Nasim Akhtar and SP Moitra from the Judicial Academy, Assam.
