In a major stride towards strengthening disaster preparedness in the education sector, more than 10,000 teachers across Nagaland have registered for the School Safety Policy (SSP) Compliance Course. The initiative is jointly spearheaded by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Department of School Education (DoSE), and NagaEd.
Launched on December 1, 2023, by chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, the course is designed to equip educators from both government and private institutions with essential knowledge and skills to enhance school-level disaster readiness and ensure student safety.
Commenting on the milestone, NSDMA Joint Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, stated, “Preparedness is the difference between panic and protection. Reaching 10,000 teacher registrations is a proud moment for Nagaland, because it shows that our schools are moving beyond fear and into readiness. Every trained teacher represents a safer future for our children.”
Head of Projects & Learning Excellence at NagaEd, Aonok Aier, remarked that the achievement reflects the collective commitment of teachers, policymakers, and communities. “This is an essential first step in disaster preparedness at the policy awareness level. More essential steps should follow in order to sustain the momentum of preparedness in the State,” he added.
Phase 2 of the course is currently underway and will continue until October 31, 2025. Educators are encouraged to complete their certification. The initiative is also linked to the School Safety Excellence Awards, which recognise schools demonstrating leadership in safety compliance.
