Nagaland: Over 200 pigs, 18 cattle die of ASF and LSD at Sotokur village

Over 200 pigs and 18 cattle have died of African Swine Fever (ASF) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) respectively at Sotokur village under Shamator district.

Informing this a press note, 2nd Head GB of Sotokur village, Ramji said that Sotokur village has been facing challenges as both the diseases were having a significant impact on the livestock in the area, leading to economic losses for the farmers and affecting their livelihoods.

Nodules or lumps on the skin of cattle have been reported from the village, causing distress among the farmers as it affected the health and productivity of their livestock.
The disease has also spread into the neighbouring areas due to its highly contagious nature.

Similarly, ASF has affected the pig population at the village, leading to high mortality of pigs and a decline in pig farming activities. This has had a direct impact on the local economy as pig farming is an important source of income for many households at the village.

Pointing out that the village was predominantly rural, with agriculture being the primary occupation of the local population, Ramji stated that to address these challenges, it was crucial to implement effective control measures such as vaccination programme, vector control strategies, and strict biosecurity protocols.

Additionally, he said raising awareness among farmers about these diseases and providing them with training on disease prevention and management could help mitigate the impact of LSD and ASF at the village.
