Wolam Nyukyan (New Pangsha) Students’ Union (WNYSU) on June 26 visited a number of paddy fields belonging to the villagers of New Pangsha, Old Pangsha and ITC Dan villages under Noklak and witnessed the massive destruction caused by natural calamities.
A press release from WNYSU president P. Nyukshing Lam and executive secretary Samo T stated that, torrential rain and landslides had caused a huge and irreparable damage by washing away a number of paddy fields belonging to the villagers. The release stated that, landslides occurred at different points and around 35 paddy fields, locally built bridges connecting villages and fields, main link road Laang tributary bridges of Jom and Khemong rivers, number of paddy field irrigations and power department channel at Lamdem Hydro Project were all washed by the overflow of Laang River. WNYSU stated that, amidst the nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic and fear of the virus, the people of Wolam (Pangsha) is now physically and mentally disturbed by the famine and risk of public movement in everyday life. An elderly man in his 70s, Mucho, said that he had completed the field work just three days prior to being washed off.
In this regard, the WNYSU appealed to the concerned authority and department to immediately compensate those affected individuals, and repair the roads, bridges and channel, as agriculture was the only means of livelihood for citizens of Wolam.
