An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Manipur police was arrested in a case related to alleged sexual assault of a a 12-year-old minor girl in Manipur’s Thoubal district.
The accused ASI was identified as Ningthoujam Muhindro Singh (50) of Tourangbam Leikai in Thoubal district currently posted at Heirok police station of the district.
The ASI who has been placed under suspension from his service soon after his arrest, has been remanded to 15 days judicial custody by a local court.
The incident took place on February 16 when the minor girl returned home helplessly crying. When questioned by her family, the learnt the ordeal that had happened to her.
Meanwhile, irate locals of the victim girl who staged a protest in their locality on Saturday, demanded stringent legal action and rigorous punishment for the accused.
The protesters also urged the authorities to implement capital punishment and strongly opposed granting him bail.
Talking to the reporters, a local woman leader condemned the alleged brutal act of the police officer, stating that it was deeply shameful for a police officer – entrusted with protecting women and children – to commit such a crime.
She demanded that the government ensure not to release the accused on bail under any circumstances and that he be awarded the highest possible punishment.
She further asserted that he should remain in jail for life and warned of intensified agitation if justice was not delivered.
A leader of the local youth club also alleged that the act of the police officer brought disgrace to the police department responsible for maintaining law and order.
He urged the government to take exemplary action and ensure that no one attempts to shield the accused.
He also called upon authorities to thoroughly investigate whether similar cases had previously been filed against him.
Protesters displayed placards reading, “Rapist ASI should be given capital punishment” and “We want justice; stop sexual harassment of minor children.”
