In a solemn show of solidarity, the Nagaland State BJP held a candlelight tribute at its State Headquarters in Kohima on Tuesday evening to honour the victims of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The event was attended by senior party leaders, legislators, and citizens.
Addressing the gathering, deputy chief minister and BLP leader, Y. Patton condemned the attack as a “heinous act” and an “assault on peace, unity and national values.”
He said the incident had drawn international condemnation and had severely affected tourism in the Valley. He also stated that the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was treating the matter with utmost seriousness and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
“There can be no place for terrorism—anywhere,” Patton said, while expressing condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Advisor Er. Kropol Vitsu, in his solidarity message, termed the attack “a crime against humanity” and said it underscored the need for collective national vigilance. Vitsu clarified that the tribute programme was initiated based on deputy CM Patton’s suggestion and expressed concern that such acts, “if not countered, will continue to endanger our people.”
He also described the attack as backed by Pakistan and emphasized unity as the key to defeating barbaric violence.
Advisor Imkong L. Imchen reflected on the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul”, which was sung during the programme, calling it a fitting tribute during national mourning. Describing the attack as a massacre by “fanatically indoctrinated radical Islamic terrorists,” Imchen said the choice of a major tourist site was aimed at drawing international attention. However, he asserted, “The emotional and rational core of the Indian nation stands united.”
Imchen affirmed his faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, calling him the “captain of the ship,” and urged Nagas to stand with the rest of the country. “It is well with my soul,” he declared, echoing the sentiment of defiance and national unity. Earlier, the programme was chaired by BJP chief spokesperson Thomas Magh, and Rev. A. Libonthung Yanthan, pastor of Kohima Lotha Baptist Church, led the prayer of solidarity.
