The inaugural Patkai Premier Cricket League (PPCL) 2026, organized by the Patkai Christian College Cricket Club, commenced on Wednesday at the college’s Patkai Ground with a grand opening ceremony and an exciting first match.
The first match saw Defaulters XI register a commanding 67-run victory over Eagle Strikers. Batting first, Defaulters XI posted 162 all out in 16.3 overs, with Salchu Namkam M Sangma top-scoring with an unbeaten 34 off 17 balls. Contributions came from Zozo L Muri (24) and Lunhokhiung T (21), while extras added 49 runs to the total.
For Eagle Strikers, Himanshu Kumar Gupta impressed with figures of 4 for 18 in 3 overs. However, their batting faltered in reply, managing only 95 in 16.4 overs. Milli Nigom top-scored with 23, while Vishal Vieria added 11.
Defaulters XI bowlers maintained tight control, led by Bendangsunep Sor, who claimed 3 for 12 in 3.4 overs. Support came from Kipito K Yeptho (2 wickets) and others including Chewen N, Aipong Phom, Sutei Lam and Vunthungo Kikon, who picked up one wicket each.
For his match-winning spell and all-round contribution, Bendangsunep Sor was named Man of the Match.
The tournament was formally inaugurated by Joshua Ben as special guest, whose participation added prestige to the event. Joshua Ben lauded the growth of cricket at the institution, encouraging players to sharpen their skills and cherish the friendships and memories built through the sport.
Addressing the gathering, the chairperson praised the Cricket Club for initiating the league and creating a competitive platform for student-athletes and cricket enthusiasts.
Reflecting on cricket’s introduction at Patkai in 2022, Kensibo emphasized the league’s role in strengthening ties between the college fraternity and the wider community. He expressed confidence that PPCL would become a trendsetter in promoting cricket culture. Dean of Students, Wetshete Joshep Thopi, described the tournament as a ray of hope for the sport’s future at Patkai, urging players to serve as role models and uphold sportsmanship.
The inaugural programme concluded with a prayer led by the chairperson.
