In a decisive move to reinforce work discipline and administrative accountability, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton conducted surprise inspections across several government departments in Wokha on May 29. The inspection drive was part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to implement the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.
Along with the surprise checking he also gathered first-hand information on the grievances faced by the respective departments to facilitate necessary follow-up actions.
The inspection began at Civil Hospital Wokha, where Patton scrutinized attendance records and interacted with the medical staff. Of the 14 doctors posted at the facility, one was found absent without approved leave. Patton directed that the day’s salary be withheld and instructed hospital authorities to submit the names of any absentees without leave approval to the Deputy Commissioner for further action.
During his rounds, Patton cross-verified office rosters to ensure that staff marked as present were physically in their designated work areas. Employees found missing despite being marked present were immediately considered absent, and salary deductions were ordered accordingly.
Patton also visited the Public Works Department (PWD) office, where several staff members were found absent without prior notification. Similar disciplinary measures were directed, including same-day salary cuts. Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of the PWD office premises, Patton instructed Executive Engineer Mhathung Kikon to submit a formal proposal for renovation work. Addressing the staff during the inspection, Patton underscored the importance of consistent office attendance and adherence to administrative protocols. “All employees must attend office without fail. Leave applications must be properly submitted and verified, and those on training must produce valid documentation,” he stated. He further warned that surprise inspections would continue in the coming months.
The Deputy Chief Minister also cited poor attendance at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat, where only 800 out of approximately 2,700 staff were reported to be attending regularly. However, following recent inspection drives, attendance figures have increased to over 1,000.
In addition to departmental inspections, Patton visited the Multi-Sports Complex at Mount Tiyi College, following a request from college authorities for urgent repairs. The facility was found to be in a severely dilapidated condition. Patton assured the college that renovation would be carried out under the Common Pool Fund. He also called upon college faculty and staff to ensure full attendance, emphasizing that as the only government college in the district, Mount Tiyi must set an example. He reiterated that absentee teachers would face salary deductions.
