Peinachi wins Zeliang wrestling title

DIMAPUR, Feb 27 (NPN):

Jalukie Town came alive with excitement as thousands of wrestling enthusiasts thronged the venue for the 28th Senior and 1st U-15 Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship, organised by the Zeliang Wrestling Association (ZWA) in collaboration with the 9 Assam Rifles.
In a gripping contest of strength and skill, Peinachi Kereu of SZWA emerged as the new senior category champion. The much-anticipated final bout ended dramatically when defending champion Nlumrai of NZWA sustained an injury in the opening round, paving the way for Peinachi’s victory. The championship showcased the true spirit of Naga traditional wrestling, marked by intense competition and sportsmanship.
The event brought together wrestlers from the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Zeliang Wrestling Associations, each displaying remarkable technique and discipline. The packed arena reverberated with cheers as bouts unfolded with electrifying intensity.
In the senior category, Peinachi Kereu of (SZWA) emerged as the champion with Nlumrai of (NZWA) securing the second position, the 3rd place was bagged by Indupeu Kereu of (SZWA) while David Nsanglung of (SZWA) was the 4th place holder.
In the U-15 category, Ciculung of (NZWA) emerged as the champion with Haireuci of (SZWA) secured the second position, the 3rd place was bagged by Peilungmingteibo Haibwang of (SZWA) and the 4th position was secured by Kerangteibo Hegwang of (SZWA).
The championship was graced by Deputy Chief Minister T. R. Zeliang as chief guest and Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Hiazu Meru, as guest of honour. Both dignitaries emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous sports, promoting healthy lifestyles and instilling values of discipline and perseverance among youth.
The Zeliang Wrestling Association expressed gratitude to Colonel Mohit Kumar Bansal and Major Anupam Mishra of the 9 Assam Rifles for their support, along with sponsors, partners and tribal wrestling associations whose collective efforts ensured the success of the event.
The 28th Senior and 1st U-15 Championship not only celebrated champions but also reinforced the enduring legacy of Naga traditional wrestling, a sport deeply rooted in culture, unity and community pride.
