Peren district Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) namely Zelianrong Baudi, Nagaland Zeliang People’s Organisation (NZPO), Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN) and Liangmai Council Nagaland have decided to stop “rampant deforestation and exploitation of natural resources” in Peren district.
In a press release, NZPO president Kevipele Iheilung and ZCN president Dr Tumda Newme stated that the CSOs of Peren district held an emergency consultative meeting on September 21 to discuss the issue.
It said the house unanimously resolved to totally prohibit the passage of round timber from Peren district except the sawn timber with immediate effect from this season onwards. The house also entrusted the student organisations of the district to impose the decision and warned that defaulters would be penalised.
The CSOs said rampant logging of timber in the district and adjoining areas since many decades have destroyed the ecological balance in the district contributing in the process of climate change in larger picture.
In order that further destruction of forest was stopped and economic activity was carried out in controlled manner, the CSOs said Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland proposed and pursued setting up of industrial zone in Jalukie which was approved in a DPDB meeting in the year 2017. However, CSOs said the matter put up to the concerned authority was “delayed inordinately”.
CSOs Peren said September 21 decisions were taken to stop rampant deforestation and exploitation of natural resource in the district. It has asked all concerned timber/log contractors to abide by the decision to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings in future in the interest of the public.
