Peren DPDB bans single‑use plastic; committee formed

DIMAPUR: Peren District Planning & Development Board (DPDB), after a lengthy deliberation, has resolved to impose a total ban on single‑use plastic in the district and constituted a committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner as convener, with UDO as member secretary, EE PHED, DRDA and CMO as members.
During the meeting, deputy chief minister T.R. Zeliang, who chaired the session, highlighted that single‑use plastics dominate the economy due to low production costs but pose severe environmental and health hazards. He pointed out that plastics take centuries to decompose, clog waterways, kill wildlife and leach toxic microplastics into food and water, thereby endangering human health.
DC Peren, Hiazu Meru, entrusted the Town Council and Ad‑hoc Town Council under the district to educate the public on minimising plastic use.
The meeting, held at the DC’s office conference hall, also discussed forming an Officers’ Club to bring officials of different departments onto a common platform. On the issue of Ntangki National Park, the board urged the forest department to coordinate with the Director and DFO Peren to ensure proper functioning of the Director’s office at the forest camp.
Earlier, the board reviewed minutes of the previous meeting on adoption of Peren Government College and hospitals. Later, the Selco Foundation presented its activities in the district through a PowerPoint presentation. Concluding the meeting, DC Hiazu Meru expressed gratitude to members for the successful conduct of the day’s proceedings.
