Nagaland’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, S. Phangnon Konyak, has been nominated to panel of vice chairperson of the Upper House. The panel members, in the absence both chairman and deputy chairman, run the House.
In a letter addressed to S. Phangnon Konyak, the Rajya Sabha secretariat joint secretary said “I am directed to state that under sub-rule (1) of rule 8 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), Chairman, Rajya Sabha, has been pleased to nominate you on the Panel of Vice Chairpersons with effect from July 17, 2023.”
Taking to twitter, Konyak said “Taking up this new responsibility in the service of our nation with great humility. My sincere gratitude to the Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji, for the trust placed in me. I shall strive to do my best.”
As per the rule 8, the Chairman shall, from time to time, nominate from amongst the members of the Council a panel of not more than [six Vice-Chairmen], any one of whom may preside over the Council in the absence of the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman when so requested by the Chairman, or in his absence, by the Deputy Chairman.
