Phek NVHCP observe World Hepatitis Day

DIMAPUR

Phek unit of the Nagaland Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP) joined the global community in observing World Hepatitis Day on July 28 at the Chief Medical Officer’s Conference Hall, Phek. The programme was conducted under the international theme “Hepatitis – Let’s Break it Down.”
According to a press release, District Programme Officer, NVHCP, Dr. Ebenezer Phesao, delivered the keynote address and emphasized that viral hepatitis—an inflammation of the liver—remains a major global health concern, potentially leading to severe liver disease and cancer. Dr. Phesao highlighted five key strategies for hepatitis prevention and control, stressing that vaccination continues to be a critical tool in halting its spread. He also shared the World Health Organization’s (WHO) target to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.
He said Nagaland was committed to this goal by aiming to reduce infections by 90% and fatalities by 60% through robust public health initiatives focusing on testing, treatment, and community outreach.
The technical session, led by District Nodal Officer, DISHA, Phek, Velato Nienu, shed light on the hepatitis burden in the district. Of the 5,229 people screened for Hepatitis B over the past two years, 74 were found to be actively infected. Meanwhile, 26 tested positive out of 5,285 screened for Hepatitis C. Nienu urged healthcare workers to maintain collaborative efforts in tackling the disease and improving patient outcomes.
The event concluded with a free screening and vaccination camp for Hepatitis B and C, providing essential preventive services to the public.
