Photography Day observed at Nagaland University

Nagaland University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication observed World Photography Day with a photography competition and exhibition at the university’s Administrative Block on August 19.
As part of the programme, guest speaker Anutosh Deb delivered a presentation on “Past, Present and Future of Photography”, tracing the evolution of photography from early cameras and film to modern digital cameras and smartphones. He also highlighted the impact of technological advancements and social media, which have expanded the reach and influence of photography in society.
Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, spoke on the growing significance of photography as a tool for communication and public engagement. He noted that photography had evolved from traditional cameras to smartphones and social media platforms, becoming a powerful medium capable of influencing public opinion.
He also emphasised the role of photography in preserving history, documenting society and bringing important stories to the public. Delivering the welcome address, Assistant Professor, Dr Arjun Das highlighted photography’s evolution as a medium of visual storytelling. He said photography not only preserves memories and documents history but also creates social awareness and influences public opinion.
Announcing the winners of the photography competition, PRO, Nagaland University, Peter Ki highlighted the power of photographs to shape public discourse, citing the iconic “Napalm Girl” photograph from the Vietnam War as an example. He said the photograph captured the suffering caused by war and contributed to shaping public opinion in the United States. He emphasised that photography was not merely an art form but a powerful medium capable of influencing society, raising awareness and contributing to meaningful change.
The formal programme was followed by a photography exhibition.
