Advisor for School Education, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, on Tuesday informed that efforts are underway to upgrade Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Wokha into a composite school to improve enrolment and academic performance.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new school building constructed under Samagra Shiksha, Nagaland, Dr. Yhome highlighted the government’s initiative to standardise schools across the state in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He said the policy aims to improve infrastructure, enhance teaching quality and ensure equal opportunities for students.
Dr. Yhome said that the new building was not merely an addition to infrastructure but a foundation for strengthening the legacy of one of Wokha’s oldest educational institutions.
He stressed that education must be viewed as a collective responsibility and called for greater public support towards government schools.
Expressing concern over increasing instances of encroachment and misuse of school premises, Dr. Yhome emphasised the urgent need to protect school land and property. He recalled that the land on which GHSS Wokha stands was purchased outright many years ago, acknowledging the contribution of villagers and families who had parted with their most valuable land for the sake of education.
He warned that private residential structures within school compounds were unacceptable and cautioned that if such encroachments continued, the matter would be taken up at the government level with civil administration support, including eviction if required.
The new structure was dedicated by Assistant Pastor, Wokha Town Baptist Church (WTBC), Zurenthung Humtsoe, while the programme was chaired by PGT, Dr. N. Janbemo Humtsoe.
Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Vineet Kumar, in his brief address, expressed satisfaction over the timely completion of the project. Recalling the poor condition of the school infrastructure during earlier visits, he said the new building would provide a more conducive learning environment for students. He added that infrastructure development must go hand in hand with academic excellence and discipline.
The programme was attended by district officials, representatives of the education department, teachers, students and community members, who welcomed the new facility as a step towards strengthening the academic environment of GHSS Wokha.
