Plantation, awareness drives and competitions mark World Environment Day

DIMAPUR: World Environment Day (WED) 2026 was commemorated across Nagaland under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future” with diverse programmes including plantation drives, seminars, competitions and awareness campaigns organised by political parties, institutions and organisations.
BJP Nagaland: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland State commemorated World Environment Day on June 5 by conducting a massive tree plantation drive across the state under the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”
As part of the initiative, over 5,000 saplings were planted across all 60 Mandals and 17 districts of Nagaland, with enthusiastic participation from BJP leaders, office bearers, karyakartas and citizens. The campaign reflected a collective commitment towards building a greener and healthier future for generations to come.
In Dimapur, the programme was graced by H. Tovihoto Ayemi, advisor for Tribal Affairs & Election, who joined the BJP Nagaland State Committee and Dimapur district BJP in planting saplings. Addressing the gathering, Tovihoto emphasized the importance of environmental protection and urged citizens to contribute towards preserving nature by planting and nurturing trees.
The campaign, inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, symbolizes gratitude towards mothers while promoting environmental stewardship. It encourages individuals to plant a tree in honour of their mother, thereby strengthening both family values and ecological responsibility.
EDUCEN: Commemorating World Environment Day, EDUCEN organised a Debate Competition and Extempore Speech Competition at Dimapur Railway High School (DRHS), Dimapur on the June 6 to promote environmental awareness, critical thinking, and public speaking skills among students.
The competitions were judged by DRHS senior teacher Rupa Dutta Dey, and EDUCEN vice president, Ankur Sharma Biswas.
12 students of DRHS participated in the debate competition, on the topic “The Responsibility of Cleanliness: Government’s Duty or Citizen’s”, whereby Team 2, who argued in favour of Government’s Responsibility, was declared the winning team.
In the extempore speech competition, the students delivered speeches on various environment-related topics. Karan Mazumder, Nitesh Kumar Mahato, and Neitik Mahato, were adjudged as the first, second, and third place winners.
Education Secretary, EDUCEN, Rohit Chakraborty delivered awareness speech emphasizing urgent need for environmental protection and sustainable living, and encouraged students to become responsible citizens and actively contribute towards preserving nature for future generations.
ICAR KVK Dimapur: ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dimapur organized Farmers’ Seminar on “Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Conservation: World Environment Day 2026 (Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For our Future)” cum Khet Bachao Abhiyan Campaign on June 5, at the KVK Conference Hall, Dimapur.
The seminar was graced by Deputy Director, State Horticulture Nursery, Amenla Longchar, as the chief guest and Head of Regional Centre, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Dr. Homeswar Kalita as the special guest, while BJP Mandal president, Ghaspani II, Honito Sema attended the programme as special invitee. All the guests shared speeches encouraging farmers to adopt eco-friendly, sustainable farming practices and briefed about the ongoing National wide programme Khet Bachao Abhiyan Campaign that will be conducted till June 30.
NPF Phek Division: Naga People’s Front (NPF) Phek Division observed WED on June 5, by carrying out tree plantation programme at Sezü Bridge, Thenyizu village.
The programme was launched by Nuzota Swuro, former MLA and Senior vice president, COB, NPF, where he expressed concern over increasing incidents of forest fires, indiscriminate destruction of natural resources and growing threat of climate change.
He said environmental degradation has become one of the greatest challenges confronting humanity today and called for urgent, collective action to reverse the trend.
As part of the observance, participants planted around 600 saplings along NH-702A under Thenyizu village.
NSLSA: Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) in collaboration with High Court Bar Association, Kohima organized Fruit Tree Plantation at the New High Court Complex, Meriema in commemoration of WED.
The plantation drive was led by member secretary, Neiko Akami, who emphasized importance of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility in addressing the challenges of climate change.
Fruit trees including persimmon, avocado, orange, apple, gauva, pears, nectarine among others were planted in the vicinity of the new court complex.
PCC: Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), in partnership with Chümoukedima Forest Department, celebrated WED on June 5, by carrying out tree-planting event at the college’s New Campus.
The event brought together students, faculty, forest officials, and community members to raise environmental awareness and encourage action for a greener future.
GYC: On the occasion of WED, the Gorkha Youth Club (GYC), Dimapur, under the aegis of the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), organised a social service and cleanliness drive in Dimapur.
The initiative aimed at promoting environmental awareness, encouraging responsible waste management and inspiring citizens to take collective responsibility for a cleaner and healthier environment. Cleaning activities were carried out at various locations, coupled with awareness efforts on reducing plastic use and adopting eco friendly habits.
The event witnessed active participation, teamwork and strong community spirit, resulting in a successful outcome. Organisers expressed gratitude to the Dimapur Municipal Council for its guidance and support, and extended appreciation to all volunteers, club members and well wishers for their dedication.
