DIMAPUR: The inaugural programme of a district wide plantation drive, initiated by Lemsachenlok in collaboration with District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) Longleng, was held at Orangkong Junction along NH 702A on June 20.
According to DIPR report, the drive was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Thungchanbemo Tungoe, who stressed collective responsibility in protecting the environment and urged all sections of society to actively participate in tree planting and conservation. Lemsachenlok chairman Y. Nuklu Phom highlighted the importance of community participation in afforestation and informed that all saplings planted would be geo tagged for proper monitoring and assessment.
Divisional forest officer R.S. Prasad spoke on the significance of plantation drives in maintaining ecological balance and combating climate change, while Phom People’s Council president Y.B. Angam Phom emphasised nurturing trees for the benefit of future generations.
Earlier, the programme commenced under the chairmanship of EAC Sakshi, Er. Keyileuteing Ndang, with invocation prayer offered by Pangpen, pastor of Orangkong Baptist Church.
The plantation drive covers a 12 km stretch from New Medical Site to Lemsachenlok Office Junction along NH 702A.
A total of 41 government departments participated, along with Orangkong Village Council and Phom People’s Council.
