In the run-up to the “World Environment Day (WED) 2024” to be celebrated under the theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”, a plastic waste collection drive and cleanliness drive was carried out across Nagaland, Saturday.
Medziphema: To reduce plastic pollution and promote recycling within the community, a community-wide plastic waste collection drive was initiated by the Medziphema administration, Chümoukedima district in alignment with the WED 2024 theme.
All the offices both state and central, institutions, houses, commercial establishments and Medziphema town trade union participated in the drive. All plastic waste from houses, offices, markets and surroundings were collected, segregated into different categories and gathered at the designated collection point. The waste management team collected the accumulated plastic waste at a toxic waste site at Plastic Waste Management Unit Medziphema Block.
Zunheboto: An interschool and college, “Rid Plastic” competition was organised by the Zunheboto Town Council. Altogether, nine schools participated and piled up 457.02 kgs of plastic waste from within the town.
LFHSS Kohima: Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kohima organised a tree plantation drive cum cleanliness drive simultaneously at Sokhriezie Park, BOC, Kohima and LFHSS, Kohima, campus.
A total of 50 students (NSS volunteers) along with six teachers under the guidance of LFHSS principal, Sr. Lucy Thomas, undertook the cleanliness drive at Sokhriezie Park, BOC in Kohima, under the “Laudato Si” project, while 136 students, under the guidance of Sister Superior, Adaphro Rosemary, four sisters, and eight teachers participated in the tree plantation drive cum cleanliness drive in and around the school campus.
Both events were graced by District Forest Officer (DFO) Nagaland Forest Department, Kohima, Chisayi, who spoke on the WED 2024 theme and briefed the students on water conservation, energy conservation etc. and encouraged them to be “environmental ambassadors.” The NSS volunteers (LFHSS) also contributed potted plants and saplings to the park.
ARTC/CISF/ AAI: A cleanliness drive and plog run was organised under “Meri Life Amplification Plan 2024” as a run-up to WED 2024 by No. 2 Training Battalion, under the aegis of Assam Rifles Training Centre & School (ARTC) in collaboration with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Airport Authority of India (AAI), at Dimapur Airport Area. Approx 50 kg of litters was collected during jogging and emphasis on the importance of “Clean India, Healthy India” was given.
