Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (F&AR) has called for ban on fishing during breeding period (June to August) in order to conserve fish and also expressed concerned on the “unethical” fishing practices.
Speaking at the River Ranching programme held under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) at Dzü-ü River, Kohima on July 21, Director of F&AR, Rongsennungba said it was essential to ban fishing during the monsoon season, particularly from June to August, when fishes breed. During this time, the director said fishes were in their reproductive phase, and fishing can disrupt their breeding patterns and reduce their populations.
“Just as hunting seasons are enforced to protect wildlife populations, fishing seasons can be implemented to safeguard fish populations and allow them to reproduce and replenish”, the director suggested.
He also suggested creating awareness among villagers about “unethical fishing practices” and called for promotion of ethical fishing which was crucial for the long-term health of the rivers. He said unethical practices such as using dynamite, poison, or oversized nets not only harm fish populations but also damage the entire ecosystem. However, by practicing ethical fishing techniques, like using sustainable gear and respecting catch limits, villagers can ensure the sustainability of fish stocks and protect the ecosystem.
He further asked the head villages to take responsibility in maintaining the biodiversity of the river by setting rules and regulations on fishing.
A brief report about the scheme was given by deputy director F & AR, Dr. Rongsenkumzuk, where he mentioned that the department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India has implemented Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana – A scheme to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector in India with an estimated investment of Rs. 20050 crores for holistic development of fisheries.
PMMSY has been implemented in all the States and Union Territories for a period of five years from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25.
Head GB, D.Khel Keduoneituo Kire thanked the department and assured to create awareness to protect the ecosystem of the river.
Kezoma village chairman Krikrosa Naki in his address spoke on unregulated fishing, which has caused huge loss and strain in the river bodies.
The programme was attended by village GBs and their subordinates.
