PM reviews oil, gas supply amid global tensions

NEW DELHI, MAR 22 (IANS/PTI):

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to review petroleum, crude oil, gas, power and fertiliser sectors, focusing on ensuring uninterrupted supply and stable distribution amid the evolving West Asia crisis.
Officials briefed the Prime Minister on fuel availability and measures to safeguard India’s energy security. Sources said the government was closely monitoring global developments and taking proactive steps to protect consumers and industries from volatility. Efforts are underway to maintain adequate reserves and strengthen supply chains amid rising geopolitical uncertainties.
The review comes as global energy markets remain tense due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, with concerns over disruptions in key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. A day earlier, Modi spoke with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing the need for peace and secure international shipping lanes.
To reduce dependence on the Middle East, India has diversified imports, increasing purchases from the United States, Russia and African nations. Officials said around 70 per cent of oil imports now come from outside the Gulf region. LPG supplies are also being managed through alternative sourcing, including imports from the US, with no disruption reported at the consumer level. Meanwhile, the government has directed faster processing of City Gas Distribution (CGD) projects, with the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) mandating disposal of applications within 10 days to accelerate PNG rollout.
Commercial LPG allocation has been raised to 50 per cent, prioritising sectors such as hospitality, food processing and community kitchens. Domestic LPG supply remains stable, with normal delivery patterns and no reported shortages, even as efforts continue to shift urban consumers toward piped natural gas.
