Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland, Rupin Sharma, has asserted that the state police were actively addressing extortion cases whenever reported.
Speaking at “The Catalyst Address”, an event organized by Sparkplugs, in the conference hall of Police Headquarters (PHQ) here on Thursday, the state police chief, however, stressed the crucial role of public participation and greater community involvement in curbing the menace of extortion.
DGP said “Made in Nagaland” mobile app and website was launched in 2023 to anonymously report extortion and drug-related crimes. However, he expressed disappointment over the low public response.
Asserting police action relied on information from citizens, the DGP urged the NGOs, civil society groups, and the public to take initiative. He maintained that collective effort could overcome such challenges.
Sharma acknowledged the need for improvements in police responsiveness and better investigative resources. At the event, DGP encouraged the students to step out of their comfort zones, saying exposure to new places and cultures fostered growth. “Travel, whether for education, work, or leisure, broadens perspectives,” he said and advised the youth to engage with diverse societies.
Reminding of the value of differences in a multicultural state like Nagaland, Sharma urged the students to ask questions, promoting interactive learning.
Highlighting the importance of staying informed on local, national, and global issues, DGP said that awareness fuelled meaningful dialogue. The event, attended by students from various schools, began with an introduction by Dietho Angami.
