Dimapur Police Saturday said it was “receiving complaints” that the public has been receiving calls from unidentified persons/numbers, claiming to be representatives of bank and they were verifying the account by asking them to reveal their ATM card number as well as ATM secret code.
In a press release, Addl SP and PRO Dimapur police said that on revealing the details, the fraudsters made unauthorized withdrawals. Police informed the public not to give away their ATM Card number or ATM secret code to any person and avoid falling prey to fraudsters. In case of any such calls, complain may immediately be lodged with the nearest Police Station, said additional PRO.
Staff Reporter Adds: On Saturday afternoon, a prominent businessman from Dimapur (who wished not be named) received a call from a person claiming to be a representative from SBI, Mumbai with mobile number– +919546559280.
He had warned the businessman that his ATM card was to be blocked and that he needed his card number and other details to restore the services immediately.
However, the businessman got the wind of the fraudster and instead warned him that he would file a complaint to the police. Soon after the warning, the businessman said that the fraudster hanged the phone.
When this reporter checked the number via TrueCaller application the number showed as ‘Fake Atm Pin’.
It may be noted that such fraudsters have been running scot-free and ripping off many gullible individuals. There is a need to spread more awareness particularly to those living in the interior parts of the state, who barely know how to use ATM cards and fall prey to such fraudsters.
