Kiphire police have arrested and suspended an armed branch constable in connection with an alleged sexual assault and rape case involving an elderly woman in Kiphire district.
According to Kiphire police PRO, a case was registered at Kiphire Women PS on June 17, following a complaint of sexual assault and rape reported from High School Ward, Kiphire.
PRO said FIR alleged that Heluikie Nsanglung alias Amos, an armed branch constable of DEF Kiphire (Regt. No. 240397), sexually assaulted and raped an elderly woman resident of the ward.
On receiving the complaint, PRO said police immediately apprehended the accused on the same day. The victim was medically examined at district hospital Kiphire, while the accused was also subjected to a medical examination before being formally arrested.
According to initial medico-legal findings, the accused was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of examination, PRO added.
Police informed that, in accordance with the new criminal laws, a forensic team from the forensic science laboratory (FSL), Dimapur, was requisitioned. The team arrived on June 18 and collected forensic evidence from the crime scene.
Taking cognisance of the incident, the police department placed the accused under immediate suspension and initiated departmental proceedings for misconduct. PRO said the accused remained in police custody, and further investigation is underway.
PRO said Kiphire DEF and Nagaland police were committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation and assured that all necessary legal steps would be taken to ensure justice is delivered at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Dimapur police Women PS also arrested one Saiful Islam (29), a truck driver from Nagaon district, Assam, in connection with the alleged rape of a 15-year-old Naga girl from Kohima.
