Acting on news reports broadcast on local YouTube news channels, Dimapur Police apprehended one individual in possession of photocopied Indian currency notes and registered a case at East Police Station.
According to DCP (Crime) & PRO Dimapur police, investigation has established that the seized notes were printed copies of Rs.500 denomination. The modus operandi of the accused was to use the notes to commit fraud.
PRO said the accused initially handed over three/ five genuine currency notes to unsuspecting customers under the pretext of supplying counterfeit notes. Once the customers, after testing the samples in the market, were convinced, they were induced to invest larger sums with the promise of receiving double the amount.
Subsequently, the accused would deliver bundles containing fake notes concealed in opaque polyethylene packets, instructing the victims to open them only after two or more days on the pretext of a “chemical process.” The accused claimed the delay was required for altering the notes and that the quality would not be high if opened prematurely. This enabled the accused to abscond before the victims realised they had been duped, PRO said. Police clarified that allegations and counter-allegations being circulated in various media platforms were largely based on misleading statements made by the accused– Miss Kitoshi@Lituna @Linokali, daughter of late Hokheto Kiba. She is also wanted in connection with two cheating cases lodged at Niuland PS and Diphupar PS.
It is suspected that the accused could be involved in multiple other cheating cases, and police have appealed to victims to come forward. PRO said that the case is being thoroughly investigated by a Special Investigation Team and efforts are on to book all persons involved.
