In Porba village under Phek district, a remarkable shift in farming practices has begun with the efforts of Puhulu, a progressive farmer who has introduced onion cultivation for the first time in her fields.
Guided by Dr. Moakala Changkiri, scientist, AICRP (VC), SAS Nagaland University and project incharge of NEH Component of Onion and Garlic funded by ICAR–DOGR, Pune, Puhulu received quality seeds, farm tools and biopesticides in 2023. To her surprise, onions thrived in Porba’s climatic conditions, producing large, healthy bulbs without chemical fertilizers.
Innovating further, she raised onion nurseries using bamboo beds, combining traditional knowledge with scientific inputs to reduce costs and ensure healthy seedlings. Today she cultivates onions on 0.07 acres, inspiring fellow villagers to adopt the crop both for household consumption and marketing, thereby reducing dependence on outside markets.
Her journey was supported by Agriculture Officer Potsülü Thelüo, Department of Agriculture, who played a vital role in connecting farmers with initiatives and resources.
Puhulu expressed gratitude to NEH Component of Onion and Garlic, SAS Medziphema and ICAR–DOGR Pune for equipping marginal farmers with knowledge and inputs. Her pioneering effort has not only diversified farming in Porba but also opened new avenues of livelihood, demonstrating how innovation and adaptation can transform communities.
