Porba village under Phek district on April 12, 2025 observed Porbami Black Day in remembrances of their forefathers who have died as a consequence of the Naga Freedom Movement and in support to its movement.
During the observance of Black Day, the programme was chaired by Vevo K Dzudo, associate pastor, BCP followed by welcome address from Ciekrohu Chiero VCC.
Yiekhusuh Tureng ex- VCC and Thupucuyi Vadeo joint secretary, NNC delivered speeches.
In a press release, Ciekrohu Chiero, chairman Village Council Porba informed that Porba village hosted two NNC (Chakhesang region) first and second meetings and resolved to defend the Nagas’ sovereignty right.
They also decided to contribute goods (cows, paddy, money, guns and ammunition) on behalf of the clan, family and individuals. This prompt action enraged the Indian army to retaliate against Porba village.
Ciekrohu informed that Indian army took the “vicious and barbarous act” against the Porba village on April 12, 1956 around 12:00 noon. The army attacked, burnt houses into ashes, plundered livestock, destroyed the granaries, tortured and killed the villagers. This claims four lives including a child namely Ngahamu, Zusaruh, Duhutso and Niesazolu.
The villagers hesitated to build new houses which compelled them to live outside the village for two years. As a result of this event, Porba village has suffered an untold miseries. After two years, an outbreak of epidemic occurs which took the lives of 404 people due to consumption of burnt rice, contaminated foods and starvation.
The villagers had gone through a trajectory of life of survival of the fittest in which they went an extra miles working in the field to sustain their livelihood and collected the woods and rocks in order to build house without improper food in which many toiled and moiled to great extent.
Consequently, the birth rates deteriorates and even lead to the loss of birth for a yearlong period. However with passage of time, the birth rate increase yet many of the children’s were impaired and handicapped which even leads to attract the feelings of contempt from the neighboring villages, Ciekrohu said.
