
Central Jail Dimapur which suffered damages at some portions due to vandalism by a mob on March 5, is currently undergoing repair works.
Iron net fencing at the front porch that was ripped open , has now been replaced by concrete walls .
Doors and other properties inside the prison, which were damaged during the incident, are reportedly under repair and renovation. The restricted entrance at the front gate has also been repaired.
Meanwhile, Dimapur Police is conducting a manhunt for the two convicts who had escaped when the prison courtyard was flooded by the mob. The mob forced open cells which facilitated the convicts to escape in the melee. The escape was detected after the Jail authorities conducted a check at each cell after the mob left the premises.
In this connection, the Jailor Dr. Oben Yanthan had lodged an FIR at Diphupar Police Station under whose jurisdiction the prison falls.
In the FIR, dated March 5, 2015, the Jailor had identified the two escaped convicts as one ‘maj.’ Lutsoe (NSCN I-M) and one ‘pvte.’ Aaon Wangsu (NSCN I-M). Both inmates were detained under NSA and whose cases were initially registered at Pfütsero Police Station.
It may also be mentioned, that another convict who had also escaped during the March 5 melee was re-arrested after he was identified by jail staff.
Besides the FIR on the two escaped convicts, the jailor has reportedly lodged separate FIRs at the same police station with regard to breaking in and vandalism of jail properties by unidentified mob and forceful extraction of the accused Sarif @ Khan.
In the aftermath of the March 5 incident, Dimapur Police has launched criminal investigation under various sections of the IPC and pursuing with its ‘look out’ for identified suspects. Though the state government had agreed to ask the CBI to take up the case, till date there has been no official intimation. Asked if any NGOs or civil bodies had cooperated with regard to the notices issued by Dimapur Police, to hand over suspects or pass information, Dimapur Police Commissioner designate, Liremo Lotha, said some NGOs had cooperated on condition of confidentiality and was confident that more arrests would be made.
Dimapur police has also reportedly arrested some of those whose photos were published in the media while the rest are absconding and or in hiding.
Liremo has also informed that the bullet extracted from the dead body of a civilian on the night of March 5 has been sent for ballistic examination and that special request has been made to deliver the result at the earliest.
Police has forwarded all the arrested persons involved in the March 5 incident to judicial custody in the court of the Judicial Magistrate Dimapur. When asked how many of them have so far been granted bail, Addl.SP Dimapur said police had no information.
It was learnt that after accused persons were forwarded to judicial custody, it was left up to the courts to decided the matter.
When this Reporter asked Public Prosecutor Y.T Sangtam on the number of those granted bail, he said bail was granted to those charged under bailable offences. He however, could not remember the exact number. He also disclosed, that the court has received plenty of bail petitions on Monday which would be taken up on March 31.
