A driver of a poultry consignment bound for Dimapur was allegedly assaulted by a home guards personnel of Assam at the check gate near Dilai Police Station early Tuesday.
The driver, Moinul Hoque, along with his assistant Jihapur, was reportedly assaulted by a home guard personnel at around 3:30 a.m. The driver said they were enroute Dimapur from Nagaon with a consignment of roughly 1,600 kg of poultry when they were stopped at the Dilai check gate. The Assam Police personnel at the check gate informed them they would not be allowed to proceed to Dimapur through the Dilai gate as per order. They asked the driver to take a detour and go from Khatkati.
However, after the incident, the driver said that the consignment was allowed to pass, but claimed that approximately 150 kg of poultry perished due to heat, which was subsequently disposed of by the Assam Veterinary team.
Meanwhile, PUD general secretary Keyigwalunga along with other members, who were also at the site, highlighted their ongoing grievances against the alleged syndicate system, which had disrupted the poultry business in the state, and urged all to support their cause against the syndicate system.
On the other hand, upon speaking with the police personnel stationed at the check gate, it was confirmed that higher authorities had issued instructions to prevent poultry consignments from passing through the Dilai check gate to Dimapur. However, no document was provided to substantiate this order.
The police personnel later clarified that there was no prohibition on poultry consignments entering Dimapur via the Dilai check gate, assuring that no vehicle would be obstructed. It was later informed that a FIR was filed at the Dilai Police Station against the assault.
