DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): Dimapur District Poultry Suppliers Union (DDPSU) has opposed what it described as an alleged syndicate system in the poultry trade and questioned enforcement action taken against poultry transport vehicles by Assam’s motor vehicle inspectors (MVIs), warning of democratic protests if the issue remains unresolved.
DDPSU president Khekishe Aye and general secretary Lashito Awomi alleged that poultry-laden vehicles were intercepted by MVIs at Bokajan and Khatkhati police stations on Tuesday night. They claimed that while some vehicles were released after challans were issued, others continued to face scrutiny.
The union questioned the basis on which poultry transport vehicles were allegedly penalised for body modifications and overloading, contending that poultry carriers were being unfairly singled out.
DDPSU maintained that enforcement action should be carried out only after proper coordination with the concerned department and in accordance with prescribed procedures. The union further alleged that the prevailing system was creating difficulties for poultry suppliers and disrupting the smooth movement of consignments.
Reiterating its opposition to the alleged syndicate system, the union said it had protested similar issues in the past and would continue to resist any practice that adversely affected poultry suppliers.
“We are ready to even go on strike or handle it diplomatically in a proper way,” the union leaders said, adding that they were seeking a transparent, fair and accountable system for the transportation and supply of poultry in the region.
