Department of Power Nagaland (DoPN) on Friday launched the ‘Go-Live’ Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project under Integrated Power. Development Scheme (IPDS).
ERP envisages transparency, efficiency and accountability in the department and will allow faster decision-making by utilising data and reporting tools through sharing of a single data source with all units in the organisation. It will also help in tracking every transaction in the department from the start till the end and keep track of supplies of materials in real time.
Further, the system will also provide synchronised information transfer between different functional areas and help in decision-making by providing real-time data even while on the move.
Speaking at the inaugural function at chief engineer conference hall here on Friday, Power Department principal secretary KD Vizo explained that ERP was software that organisations used to manage day-to-day activities like finance & control, human resource management, inventory management, project management, risk management and compliance, and supply chain operations.
He said system tied together a multitude of business processes and enabled flow of data among them by collecting an organisation’s shared transactional data from multiple sources, eliminated data duplication and ensured data integrity with a single source of truth.
He claimed ERP system was critical for managing thousands of businesses of all sizes and in all industries and was as indispensable as the electricity.
Mentioning that the department had undertaken studies and took a decision to implement System Applications & Product (SAP) for office automation, Vizo said it was a prudent decision considering long-term requirements of the department.
He said ERP implementation in the department comprised of three main modules for materials management, (inventory), human resource management and financial management.
He said ERP was an in-house management tool for use by officers and staff of the department, adding that it was expected that lot of time and expenses would be saved through integration of financial, human resources and resource management.
He acknowledged that adoption of such systems took time and there might even be some hurdles in using them 100% for operations, especially from remote locations where connectivity might be an issue. He however hoped that system integrator Infinity Infomatic Pvt Ltd would leave no stone unturned to ensure that implementation of SAP in the department was a success and make it an example for other departments in Nagaland to follow.
In his brief address, Engineer-in-Chief Nribemo Mozhui cautioned that if the project was not handled carefully, it would be a disaster. He hoped that with the implementation of ERP, smooth functioning in the department could be expected as it would encourage a competitive spirit and take the department to a higher level. CE (D&R) Moa Aier also spoke on the occasion. The programme was chaired by superintending engineer (R) Lobosang Jamir.
