President of India, Droupadi Murmu, addressed the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations in New Delhi today, highlighting that voting is not merely a political act but a reflection of citizens’ faith in the democratic process.
Speaking at the event, President Murmu said the strength of India’s democracy lies not only in the number of voters but also in the depth of the democratic spirit.
“Even our oldest voters, divyang citizens, and those in remote areas exercise their right to vote,” she noted, appreciating both voters and the election machinery for inspiring examples of active participation under the leadership of the Election Commission.
The President underscored that public participation gives practical shape to democracy at the grassroots level. She commended the Election Commission’s efforts to ensure “no voter is left behind,” pointing to various programs conducted to raise voter awareness.
This year’s theme, “My India, My Vote: Indian Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy,” reflects the importance of exercising the franchise as the cornerstone of democratic governance.
“Voting is not merely a political expression; it is also a means for citizens to voice their aspirations and a concrete reflection of our constitutional ideals of political and social justice and equality,” she said. Emphasising the value of the “One Person, One Vote” principle, President Murmu added that India’s voters have upheld their faith in democracy, earning global respect for the country’s electoral system.
Highlighting civic responsibility, the President urged all adult citizens to exercise their franchise judiciously, free from temptation, misinformation, or prejudice, thereby strengthening the electoral system through the power of their conscience. President Murmu also congratulated young voters who have recently received their voter ID cards, describing them as the architects of India’s future. She expressed confidence that today’s youth would exercise their right to vote responsibly and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
National Voters’ Day has been observed annually on January 25 since 2011 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India. The event aims to recognise the central role of voters, promote electoral awareness, and encourage active participation in the democratic process.
