The prevailing monsoon weather conditions have caused widespread damage throughout the state, with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) receiving reports of loss of human lives and damage to houses, roads, bridges, breast wall of roads, fishery ponds, paddy fields and jhum cultivation.
According to a press note by NSDMA joint chief executive officer Johnny Ruangmei, two boys from Kejok village in Tuensang district were washed away by Ayong nullah on June 28. While the body of one boy was retrieved the same day, search operation continued for the other boy till third day. But, with no sighting of the body, the operation was called off with consent from the father of the deceased and all parties involved in the operation.
As per assessment report from the ground, engineer in-charge notified restoration of a one-way traffic on the road between Mangangkhi and Yangli in Tuensang district. However, since the land above the road was not stable, mud clearing had been initiated with the help of the short term maintenance contract team.
A youth drowned in Nsonji Lake in Tseminyu district where the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was called in to assist with the search and rescue efforts. The search and rescue mission, which included the NDRF, Tseminyu District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and local volunteers, was called off after the body was recovered at 4:40 pm on July 1.
In Mokokchung district, landslide occurred in several wards affecting human habitation.
In Kiphire district, continuous rains caused damage to public infrastructure, affecting several families in Forest Ward, Medical Ward, Kiphire-Amahator Road, Kiza Colony and Jail Ward, prompting their evacuation.
Several landslides and road blockages were also reported from Fakim/Tsundang area, Pungro sub-division, Tsuvong Ward, and between Sitimi and Shisimi. Due to mudslide, Penkim and Fakim had been cut off from Tsundang, Sangtsong and Vongtsuvong.
Another rockslide between Khongjiri and Mimi was reported, while the route to Thanamir had been entirely cut off due to landslides in multiple locations. Soil erosion by Thusangki river near Kiphire headquarters was also reported on July 2, causing damage to paddy fields.
A youth was reportedly swept away in Dzuvuru stream in Kohima district around 4 pm on June 29. Thought the Kohima DDMA, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers conducted search and rescue operations, the body has not been sighted till Wednesday.
The Wokha and Zunheboto DDMAs too had been alerted regarding this matter. The search operation is also being carried out in Zunheboto (Lazami area) and Doyang dam area in Wokha district, and villages located upstream of Doyang river are also assisting in the operation.
Landslide was reported from Punyaongan Ward 4, Punyaongan region and Sanglao village in Noklak district. Due to incessant rain, road damages and road sinking had been reported between Chingmei and Noklak and Nokak- Saddle road.
A report was also received from Noklak district about a man being swept away by strong water current at Nguhaiu, between Saddle and Noklak on July 1. The Noklak DDMA and local volunteers conducted search operation and retrieved the body around 8 pm that day.
In Zunheboto district, several houses were destroyed by landslides at DC Hill West, while Zhavame village in Phek district reported damage to paddy fields due to flash flood.
Shiponger and Muksuke bridges between Chessore and Y Anner in Shamator district were partially destroyed by a flash flood on July 2. Another large landslide was reported from NAP Ward. There have also been reports of landslides and mudslides at multiple locations in the district.
Landslide was also reported on the Tening-Nsong road in Peren district, with the Peren DDMA and department concerned carrying out the debris clearance. Stating that the NSDMA was still compiling reports of damage, Ruangmei requested the DDMAs and line departments to be alert and vigilant considering the ongoing monsoon season.
Further, with water levels of many rivers in the state rising following the continuous rainfall over the past days, he also requested the public to refrain from fishing, picnicking, etc, during the monsoon season.
