Protecting our youth from job frauds and exploitation

Issued by Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP)

To all Naga brothers and sisters, especially our youth and families across Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam: For generations, due to limited job opportunities in our home states, many of our Naga people have migrated to cities across India in search of employment and a better livelihood. We are grateful that thousands have found respectable work and are thriving. However, it is a painful truth that many of our youth have repeatedly fallen prey to fraudulent job offers, illegal businesses, and exploitative work environments. This carelessness has, in some cases, caused irreversible damage to individuals, tarnished our community’s reputation, and even led to tragic, life-threatening consequences. One of the main reasons for such incidents is the lack of proper awareness and due diligence. Too often, young people venture into unfamiliar cities based solely on recommendations from peers or acquaintances, without verifying the legitimacy of the job, company, or recruiter. While peer references are helpful, they should never be the only source of validation. We appeal not just to the youth, but also to parents, elders, and community leaders back home: Please ensure that proper guidance and counseling is given before sending young people to unknown cities. Encourage them to cross-verify opportunities through trusted channels, especially with Naga and Northeast student/community unions in those respective cities. The Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP) strongly recommends that any individual planning to come to Pune for employment, higher education, or any other purpose first contact our Union for verification and support. We can help you:
 Confirm the legitimacy of job offers or institutions.
 Assist in finding reliable and safe employment or admissions.
 Provide protection and support through proper registration with the Union. We have encountered numerous unfortunate incidents, particularly involving unverified BPO jobs, fraudulent wellness centers, and illegal SPA therapist placements. Our youth were lured by promises of easy interviews and high starting salaries, only to end up in police raids or situations of exploitation, humiliating our entire community. Therefore, the Naga Students’ Union Pune has launched a Job & Welfare Awareness Drive aimed at protecting Naga individuals who wish to migrate to Pune. Regardless of your tribe or background, every Naga is welcome to reach out to us. Through proper registration with NSUP,
you will be placed under our protection and guidance, reducing risks of workplace abuse, academic fraud, and community-based harassment. We are committed to strengthening our union and protecting our people, as we’ve even seen cases where people were promised one thing and forced into another.
This initiative is not limited to Pune. We call upon all other Naga and Northeast students’ unions across India to carry forward this mission in their respective cities. Let us work together to ensure that no more of our people fall victim to deceit and exploitation. This message serves as both a warning and a call to action. We need everyone’s cooperation to make this work. Together, let us build a safer, more informed future for our youth.
In solidarity,
