PSU endorses NSF stand on Avakhung

DIMAPUR: Pochury Students’ Union (PSU) has issued a press statement in categorical and unreserved endorsement of the official representations made by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) regarding the prevailing security and administrative circumstances at Avakhung village, Meluri district.
PSU said the concerns articulated by NSF on civil liberties, community welfare and the rule of law warranted immediate executive and administrative attention. It pointed to the September 19 incident, wherein an accredited NSF goodwill delegation en route to a cultural exchange programme with the Naga Students’ Organization (NSO) was impeded, and the subsequent refusal of the Company Commander to grant a procedural audience.
PSU described this as a serious departure from administrative decorum and civil military coordination, undermining institutional goodwill and constructive dialogue.
PSU endorsed NSF’s demand for the relocation of the Avakhung Check Gate from the village proper and withdrawal of the Assam Rifles outpost from civilian habitation zones to preserve civic spaces and mitigate public distress.
It also stressed the need to guarantee uninterrupted healthcare access, citing reports of delays faced by patients en route to dispensaries and health facilities.
The Union further called for an end to domiciliary visits, interrogations by personnel in civilian attire and arbitrary surveillance of residents, stating that fundamental rights and privacy must be protected.
Highlighting the dependence of border populations on agrarian trade and local supply chains, PSU urged that arbitrary obstruction of agricultural produce, essential commodities and lawful commercial transit must cease immediately to prevent economic hardship. It also sought transparency regarding the legal authority sanctioning occupancy or operational control of public infrastructure, including the International Trade Centre (ITC) and facilities of the Departments of Health & Family Welfare, Industries & Commerce, and Transport.
Pochury Students’ Union stressed that all security dispositions must operate strictly within statutory law and in close liaison with civil authorities and the State Government.
The Union asserted that the Naga populace has a legitimate entitlement to peaceful existence, unhindered livelihood activities, timely medical assistance and preservation of historic cultural linkages. It therefore called upon the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, and the Government of Nagaland to give due cognizance to the democratic representations and institute immediate remedial measures, ensuring that constitutional propriety and civilian welfare remain paramount.
