PTBA seminar stresses women’s safety and legal awareness

DIMAPUR: Pfutsero Town Business Association (PTBA), through its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and in collaboration with Pfutsero Town Mothers’ Association (PTMA), organised a seminar on the theme “Together for Women’s Safety and Dignity” at Pioneer Complex, CBCC, Pfutsero, on June 27.
The programme was chaired by Kivi Venuh Sakhrie, finance secretary, PTBA, with invocation by Wete‑u Wetsah, advisor, PTMA. Vitale‑u Leah Curhah, chairperson of PTBA ICC, delivered the welcome address, highlighting that the ICC, constituted on April 1, 2025, aims to promote a safe and respectful workplace. PTMA president Viekope‑u Kenye, in her greetings, stressed that protecting women was a shared responsibility of families and society.
Superintendent of Police, Phek, Dr. Pritpal Kaur Batra, spoke on “Women’s Safety, Cyber Awareness and the Role of Society in Creating Safe Spaces.” Sharing her personal journey, she encouraged women to empower one another and emphasised that every woman deserves dignity, equal opportunity and safety. She cautioned against cyber threats such as stalking, image morphing, deepfakes, fake dating websites, trolling, doxxing and online fraud, while explaining legal provisions and punishments for such offences. Dr. Batra urged parents to remain actively involved in their children’s lives and called for closer coordination among police, churches, NGOs, educational institutions and civil society to make Phek a women crime‑free district.
Advocate and Retainer Lawyer, Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA), Sekhotso Rokha, spoke on “Women’s Legal Rights, Workplace Dignity and the Role of ICC.” He explained laws relating to domestic violence, sexual harassment, equal remuneration, maintenance, dowry prohibition, maternity benefits, free legal aid and property rights. He noted that many family disputes and domestic violence cases are linked to alcohol abuse and reminded participants that perpetrators are often within families. He urged community leaders to prevent child marriages, warning of legal consequences, and advised youth seeking employment outside the state to remain vigilant of their rights.
An interactive session allowed participants to engage directly with the resource persons on issues of women’s safety, cyber crime and legal protection.
Delivering the vote of thanks, PTBA president Vekusu Chuzho expressed gratitude to the resource persons, PTMA, participating institutions, churches, educational institutions and civil society organisations for their support. The programme concluded with a closing prayer by Punesalu Chuzho, PTMA advisor.
