Perks of turning 60!
In this column, I’ve mostly ended up talking about Gen Zers and millennials: their spendings, their struggles, their hustles, etc. But this week, the conversation on the Moneybar platform pulled me in a different direction. There was an informative discussion about our senior citizens. And maybe I can share about it here today. Yes, the folks who may not care about NFTs/Crypto but definitely care about bus passes, pensions and hospital visits.
Now, if you’re 60 or above, you actually qualify for something quite cool and useful, the Senior Citizen Card. Just like an ID card, but better. Issued by state governments across India, it’s available to any citizen above 60.
And the perks are real: pension schemes, medical benefits, travel concessions, and even higher interest rates on small savings schemes and bank FDs.
Think of it this way, in some states, seniors get a monthly pension, in others free check-ups, hearing aids, or subsidised hospital treatment. Travel concessions are common too, with discounts on buses or even a fixed quota of free rides every year. There are also schemes like home doctor visits or food subsidies. Each state has its own benefits, but the message is clear, this card opens doors to real, everyday support.
The catch is, many senior citizens don’t know about it, or they assume the paperwork is too much hassle. That’s where we, the younger ones step in. Not just to teach them how to use smartphones, book a cab, or find a route on Google Maps, but also to help them apply for something that actually matters.
At Moneybar, we keep reminding ourselves that conversations around money doesn’t come with an age limit. There’s always something new happening, be it for students, working professionals, or seniors. On Moneybar, information flows and the community stay updated. All you have to do is download app on playstore/appstore, sign up and request to join!
“So maybe this week, skip the usual small talk and ask, ‘Aaji Senior Citizen Card apply kuribo?”
