In a strategic move ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Dashrath Nagar village in Gaya district on Friday to engage with local communities and honor the memory of the legendary ‘Mountain Man’.
During his visit, Gandhi met with the family of Dashrath Manjhi, renowned for his remarkable effort to carve a path through a mountain in Gehlor village, connecting it with Wajirganj block. Gandhi was warmly received by Bhagirath Manjhi, Dashrath’s son, who greeted him with traditional hospitality. The leader shared coconut water with the family, listened to their concerns about financial hardships, and sat in earnest discussion.
Bhagirath Manjhi reportedly expressed his interest in contesting the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections from the Bodh Gaya constituency, although no formal announcement was made.
Following the meeting, Gandhi paid homage by garlanding Dashrath Manjhi’s statue in Gehlor village. He was accompanied by Bhagirath Manjhi during the visit before heading to Rajgir for a scheduled programme.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi arrived at Gaya Airport to a warm welcome from Congress supporters and leaders. This marks Gandhi’s sixth visit to Bihar in 2025, emphasizing his effort to bolster the party’s grassroots presence ahead of the elections.
Gandhi’s engagements in Bihar reflect Congress’s broader strategy to reconnect with local icons, marginalized groups, and symbolic figures to regain political ground. His itinerary includes a ‘Samvidhan Sammelan’ in Rajgir and a ‘Mahila Samvad’ (Women’s Dialogue) event back in Gaya, along with a visit to the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, as part of his outreach to women and marginalized communities across the state.
