Railway doubling project could bypass Nagaland: NFR

DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN)

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials have raised serious concern over uncertain future of the Lumding–Furkating Railway Line Doubling Project within Nagaland.
They warned that continued inaction in addressing the challenges could lead to a rerouting of the project, potentially bypassing the state entirely.
According to NPCC’s communications department, the Railway authorities told Nagaland’s Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir on June 10, 2025 when he undertook a detailed visit to Dimapur, Sukhovi, and Molvom Railway Stations.
During the visit, officials briefed the MP on ongoing development works and highlighted several impediments hampering project progress.
He held a series of meetings with officials from Indian railways and various state government departments of dimapur and Chumoukedima districts to assess the ongoing railway development projects in the state.
At Dimapur railway station, Jamir conducted an in-depth review meeting with officials from the Dimapur and Lumding railway divisions, along with representatives from the district administration, Nagaland police department, land revenue department, and Nagaland state transport department of Dimapur district.
The discussions focused on the status of the Dimapur Railway Station Upgradation Project.
At Sukhovi Railway Station, MP chaired a meeting attended by Railway officials, ADC and ADCP of Chumoukedima. Officials informed that with both passenger and freight services currently operating and growing at near optimum capacity, there was an urgent need for the development of additional support infrastructure, including establishment of a permanent police outpost, setting up a livestock screening and quarantine facility and Installation of an Inner Line Permit (ILP) checkpoint with integrated detention and deportation capabilities.
Other pressing concerns highlighted included lack of staff accommodation due to the stalled construction of staff quarters and the dilapidated condition of key road stretches linking the station to the National Highway.
At Molvom Railway Station, Railway officials reported significant progress.
With track laying and core station infrastructure completed, and a substantial portion of the loading/unloading dock developed, officials told MP that the station was projected to be commissioned within the next two to three months.
Jamir reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that critical infrastructure projects in Nagaland receive the attention and support they require for timely completion. He also all possible support and assistance from his end to facilitate their smooth implementation.
