Rain causes waterlogging, traffic jam in Dimapur

Dimapur witnessed heavy downpour on Monday causing severe waterlogging and traffic jams in several areas, which once again exposed the city’s glaring deficiencies in town planning and drainage infrastructure.

Key commercial areas such as New Market, Hazi Park, and nearby localities were mostly affected with clogged drains resulting in widespread flooding and causing hardship to both commuters and residents.

The inundation rendered many footpaths and roads virtually impassable, forcing pedestrians to wade through knee-deep waters in several spots.

The situation triggered massive traffic jams, especially during peak hours, as vehicles struggled to manoeuvre through waterlogged and narrowed lanes. Commuters also complained of foul smell emanating from the accumulated water. Adding to the chaos, garbage swept along by the floodwaters piled up across various streets, further exacerbating the sanitation crisis.

Amid deteriorating conditions, auto-rickshaw drivers reportedly took advantage of the situation and hiked fares citing poor road conditions and extended travel times. Many commuters voiced their frustration over the sudden fare increases. Shopkeepers in affected areas have also raised concern over health risks posed by the stagnant water. “Every year during the monsoon, we face the same problems.

The drains are never cleaned on time, and we are left to deal with flooded streets,” lamented a shop owner at New Market. In response to the worsening waterlogging in New Market area, New Market Ward-19 GB, Khekishe Aye, acknowledged that while the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) assured the public of ongoing efforts to address clogged drains, challenges persisted. He pointed out that widespread encroachments have left little space for the construction of proper drainage systems, making it difficult for municipal teams to effectively clear blockages.

The GB appealed to the administration to urgently construct new drainage systems including market area to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and prevent future clogging.
With monsoon season around the corner, Dimapur residents could expect more monsoon-related problems unless swift and comprehensive action was taken to improve drainage management.
