DIMAPUR, JUL 20 (NPN): The death toll from rain-triggered landslides in Mon district has risen to nine, while four persons remained missing, as continuous heavy rainfall continued to batter several parts of Nagaland, triggering landslides, flash floods and mudslides that damaged houses, infrastructure and agricultural land.
In a press release, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said reports received from the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) indicated extensive damage across multiple districts, with assessment of losses still underway.
Mon district remained the worst affected, where the death toll rose to nine in separate landslide incidents, including five fatalities at Shantham Ward in Mon town.
In Naginimora, four people swept away by flash floods were rescued. One woman suffered a fractured hand while three men suffered minor injuries. Four others remain missing, and search and rescue operations are continuing with the support of the district administration, SDRF, police and other line departments. Shamator district reported widespread landslides affecting six villages and around 7,000 people, while damage assessment is underway.
In Tuensang, landslides and flash floods affected 12 villages and about 201 people. At least 22 houses were fully damaged and 25 partially damaged.
Zunheboto reported landslides and flooding in around 30 villages, while Mokokchung recorded landslides in 18 villages affecting 84 people.
Longleng reported landslides in nine villages affecting 102 people, with five kutcha houses fully damaged and another five partially damaged.
Kiphire reported landslides in eight villages affecting 34 people and damaging seven houses.
Landslides, mudslides and flash floods were also reported from five villages in Noklak, three villages in Wokha and two villages in Meluri, where damage assessment is continuing.
NSDMA said livestock losses included 11 mithuns, 13 cattle and three pigs in Mon; 18 pigs in Shamator; 27 pigs in Wokha; five pigs in Tseminyu; four mithuns in Noklak; and one dog and one cat in Kiphire.
NSDMA said it was closely monitoring the situation in coordination with district authorities and other line departments. It said search and rescue operations, restoration of essential services and detailed damage assessment were continuing in the affected areas.
The authority has advised the public to avoid landslide-prone areas, overflowing rivers and vulnerable slopes during continuous rainfall and to follow advisories issued by the district administrations. It added that more reports from the affected districts are awaited.
NSDMA forecasts thunderstorms, lightning: Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a four-day weather advisory forecasting localized thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rainfall across several districts from July 21-24, 2026.
In a press release, NSDMA advised people to exercise caution, particularly during periods of thunderstorm activity, lightning and localized heavy rainfall.
On July 21, localized thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are likely over Kohima, Mokokchung, Mon, Longleng, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Tseminyu and Noklak districts. Light rain is also expected at a few places in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Kiphire, Meluri, Peren, Shamator and Tuensang.
On July 22, thunderstorm and lightning activity is expected to intensify across Dimapur, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Tseminyu and Zunheboto, with scattered light to moderate rainfall. Kohima, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator and Meluri are also likely to receive light rainfall at a few places.
On July 23, localized thunderstorms with lightning and scattered light rainfall are forecast over Chümoukedima, Longleng, Mon, Peren, Tseminyu, Tuensang and Zunheboto districts, while most other districts are likely to receive isolated light rain or experience no significant weather warning.
On July 24, localized thunderstorms and lightning with scattered light rainfall are expected over Kohima, Longleng, Meluri, Noklak, Wokha and Tuensang. Light rain at a few places is also likely over Dimapur, Kiphire, Niuland, Peren, Phek, Shamator, Tseminyu and Zunheboto.
NSDMA advised residents to stay updated with official weather forecasts and exercise caution during adverse weather conditions.
Traffic advisory for Mokokchung: Mokokchung district administration has issued a traffic advisory following the sinking of a road stretch between Unger village and Chuchuyimlang village, directing commuters to use an alternate route in the interest of public safety.
In a public advisory, the deputy commissioner (DC) Mokokchung Ajit Kumar Verma informed that commuters travelling to Mokokchung headquarters should take the alternate route via Unger Village Local Ground to the Kelingmen/Asangma Road Junction.
Motorists travelling from Mokokchung headquarters have been advised to use the route via Kelingmen/Asangma Road Junction to Unger Village Local Ground.
The administration clarified that the alternate route was only for light motor vehicles and urged commuters to cooperate and exercise caution while travelling.
