India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that enhanced rainfall/thunderstorm activity was likely to continue over North East region till April 7, 2024. IMD stated that fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall with isolated thunderstorms & lightning were very likely over Arunachal Pradesh; scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during April 2-5, 2024.
It cautioned that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) was very likely at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura; with lightning very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh.
Extreme heat likely in Apr-Jun: IMD has also predicted that India was set to experience extreme heat during the April to June period, with the central and western peninsular parts expected to face the worst impact.
IMD said that above-normal maximum temperatures were likely over most parts of the country during the April-June period, with a high probability over central and western peninsular India.
Normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely over some parts of the western Himalayan region, North Eastern states and north Odisha, he said.
Above-normal heatwave days are likely over most parts in the plains during this period. IMD stated that 10-20 days of heat wave were expected in different parts of the country against a normal of four to eight days.
