Shillong, May 26 (PTI): A man from Rajasthan has been arrested in connection with a cyber fraud case for allegedly impersonating IPS officer Vivekanand Singh Rathore through a fake social media profile, Meghalaya Police said on Tuesday.
According to police, the accused allegedly created a fake social media account in the name of the IPS officer and fraudulently contacted the victim, a resident of Meghalaya, who later transferred money after being deceived.
IPS officer Rathore is currently the deputy inspector general of the western range of Meghalaya and previously served as the SSP of Ri-Bhoi district.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Nongpoh police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, and an investigation was launched.
Police identified the accused as Jahul Ali, a resident of Kakrali Meo in Rajasthan’s Alwar district.
SP Giri Prasad said the accused was arrested from Jaipur on May 23 following a sustained investigation, technical surveillance and inputs gathered through internal sources.
Further investigation into the case is underway, police added.
