The Khiamniungan Students’ Union Dimapur, in collaboration with the Khiamniungan Union Dimapur and the Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam Dimapur Unit, hosted a grand reception at Dimapur Airport on May 29 to honour L. Hangthing, the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award for his outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture.
The event drew community members, leaders, and well-wishers who came together to celebrate the achievements of the noted farmer from Noklak.
L. Hangthing, in his address, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and support he received. Reflecting on his journey, he said he began working in agriculture in 1988 and attributed his success to divine blessings and the steadfast support of the Naga people, the state and central governments, and various departments that aided his agricultural pursuits. Hangthing said that raised among ten siblings in a family that could not afford formal education, he followed his parents’ path in traditional cultivation. However, recognizing the limitations of subsistence farming, he embraced modern agricultural practices through government training programs. His efforts in developing nurseries, experimenting with diverse crops, and adapting to changing climatic conditions earned him recognition at the national level.
The Padma Shri was conferred upon Hangthing by President Droupadi Murmu during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on May 27. The ceremony, attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, recognized achievers across the country. This year, the President awarded seven Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri honours.
The programme was chaired by President of the Khiamniungan Students’ Union Dimapur Muno Shiu, invocation and scripture reading by youth pastor, Khiamniungan Baptist Church Diphupar B Pukho. Short speeches were also delivered by president of Khiamniungan Union Dimapur Kamthong, representatives of the Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam Dimapur Unit, president Thang Hoikam Dimapur UNIT and Pheniang, vice president of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Union Dimapur (ENPUD), who praised Hangthing’s dedication and highlighted his achievement as a source of pride and inspiration for the entire region.
