NECU confers Honorary Doctorate on Rio

Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the need for global collaboration, innovation, and cultural preservation while addressing the first convocation of North East Christian University (NECU) at Anchor Complex, Burma Camp, Dimapur, on Tuesday.

NECU conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) on Neiphiu Rio during its first convocation where Nagaland Governor La Ganesan, who is also the visitor of NECU, presented the honorary certificate to Rio.

In his acceptance speech, Rio expressed gratitude and humility, stating that the recognition was not just a personal achievement but a reflection of collective efforts to foster international relations and drive transformative initiatives for community development.

He described the university as an institution of academic excellence and a hub for transformative ideas, nurturing minds that dared to dream beyond borders, noting that the university’s dedication to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and intellectually-stimulating environment had been a source of inspiration to many, including himself.

Rio said he had always believed that true progress was achieved on the foundation of global collaboration and innovative thinking, and cited the interconnected world’s ability to bridge culture and ideas.

He quoted Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” stating that these words align with the university’s mission. He mentioned that he felt blessed to have served the state and its people for over five decades in various capacities.

Observing that everyone faced unique challenges, Rio remarked that his journey had been possible only through the abundant blessings of God and the unwavering love and support of the people. He expressed deep gratitude to everyone who had stood by him and his family with steadfast support, solidarity, and prayers.

He congratulated the graduating students on their remarkable achievement, acknowledging their tireless efforts in overcoming challenges. He said each of them had a unique and inspiring story, which was a testament to their resilience.

Though their hurdles might have differed, he pointed out that they had all triumphed, their journey bring joy and pride to their families and loved ones.

The chief minister encouraged the graduates to seize the opportunities before them, giving their best in their every endeavour. He urged them to help forge a new Nagaland with their hard work and commitment, one that would evolve into a global destination, an international hub, and a key contributor to India’s growth.

He said Nagaland’s future rested on their shoulders and, through their success, the state and nation would rise to greater heights. Quoting Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” he urged them to embrace that belief and let their excellence guide both their future and the future of the nation.

Maintaining that Nagaland and its people embodied incredible cultural diversity and richness, with traditions that span back to time immemorial, Rio described the state as a bright star within India, a land with a unique history and culture as vibrant as its landscapes.

Rio said Nagaland’s enduring heritage and resilient spirit inspired not only its people but also those who believed that diversity was strength.

He urged the graduates to become passionate ambassadors of Nagaland on the global stage, embracing the legacy of the state and letting its story of courage, innovation, and unity inspire others to contribute to nation building.

While celebrating the convocation, he stressed that it was important to reaffirm the commitment to building bridges across cultures, fostering peace, and developing innovative programmes that brought hope and progress to every community.

He said he stood not as someone who had reached the pinnacle of success, but as a fellow traveler on the path of lifelong learning and service. He assured the gathering of advancing the causes of education, international dialogue, and community development, ideals that the university upheld with great passion.

Rio advised the gathering to lead their lives with integrity, think boldly, and always remember that each of them had the power to change the world. He urged them to move forward with purpose, passion, and unwavering belief that the future was as bright as the dreams they dared to pursue.

In his convocation speech, Governor Ganesan expressed pride and joy in standing with the graduating class, celebrating their perseverance, curiosity, and hard work. He emphasised the unique opportunity that NECU had provided, blending academic rigour with mandatory community service, which would guide the graduates in their future paths.

He acknowledged Rio’s leadership and contribution to Nagaland’s progress, adding that the honorary D Litt was a testament to his dedication and commitment to the betterment of the community.

As NECU’s visitor, he expressed immense pride in the university’s growth and achievements. In a short span, he noted that the university had addressed critical gaps in the region’s education system, particularly in offering quality higher education, helping prevent students from studying outside the Northeast.

Through global partnerships and pioneering programmes such as International Relations, Korean Language, and Indigenous Studies, he claimed that the NECU prepared students for a global future.

He said the university’s commitment to preserving Naga culture through programmes such as the Annual Symposium on Naga Culture and certification of traditional healers set it apart. He pointed out that the NECU’s broader impact, from nursing placements to initiatives supporting local farmers, showcased its dedication to both academic excellence and community well-being.

He pledged unwavering support to the university, expressing pride in being associated with it. He assured continued support to the university’s innovative programmes aimed at improving community life. He said he looked forward to NECU producing graduates who were not only knowledgeable and skilled but also disciplined, compassionate, and ready to serve others.

He recalled a message of former Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu, urging students to seek knowledge wherever opportunities arose, including studying abroad if possible, noting that the core message was to “learn, yearn, but return” to serve the nation.

Earlier, the programme commenced with singing of National Anthem, followed by invocation by Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho and welcoming of guests by Gugu Haralu.

NECU chancellor Prof Rev Dr Akheto Sema declared the convocation ceremony open, following which the governor, chief minister, university’s pro-chancellor Prof Dr Darlando Khathing and chancellor lit the ceremonial lamp.
