Dr. Neiphiu Rio unveils Nagaland Solar Mission

In a significant initiative to address ongoing power shortages and advance renewable energy, Nagaland chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio formally inaugurated the Nagaland Solar Mission at the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in the Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima, in the presence of Minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs, K.G. Kenye, on Monday.

The effort is in accordance with the national Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG:MBY) and aims to transform home solar energy throughout the state.

During the formal inauguration of the Nagaland Solar Mission, Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio proclaimed the effort as a significant advancement in addressing the state’s persistent power deficits and promoting the clean energy agenda.

Rio emphasized the government’s dedication to sustainable development via renewable energy. The chief minister offered an extra state subsidy of up to Rs. 50,000 for Rooftop Solar Systems not exceeding 3 kilowatts to enhance the mission’s effect.

This financial assistance, allocated from the state budget, aims to augment the federal government’s current incentives under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG:MBY).

Dr. Rio emphasized that this dual-subsidy strategy will substantially alleviate the financial strain on homes, rendering solar energy more attainable for the typical individual.

He emphasized the economic advantages for homeowners, indicating that solar power systems will diminish reliance on traditional electricity and enable individuals to decrease their utility expenses by contributing excess energy to the grid.

The chief minister urged the citizens of Nagaland to seize the opportunity for public involvement. The project is anticipated to substantially aid the national objective of deploying 1 crore rooftop solar systems by 2026–27, establishing Nagaland as a proactive contributor to India’s overarching renewable energy agenda.

KG Kenye, minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs, stated in a concise address that the augmented state subsidy from the government will make rooftop solar installations more affordable, anticipating a positive public response and engagement in achieving Nagaland’s green energy revolution. He expressed confidence that this initiative will substantially mitigate the persistent power shortages in the state and promote essential socio-economic development for the inhabitants of Nagaland.

The project summary was presented by Asangla Imti, secretary of the Power department, followed by a PowerPoint presentation by a departmental official. The launch program was attended by deputy chief minister Y. Patton, chief secretary Dr. J. Alam, Home commissioner Vyasan R., Administrative Heads of Departments, and senior officials.

The administration further stated that, based on the latest figures, 247 applications had been made online to access the plan. To provide effortless installation, 55 (fifty-five) national and state vendors are available inside the state.
