As part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) Scheme 2024–2025, the department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources conducted an awareness and river ranching programme at Chichung River, Mokokchung on Thursday. A total of one lakh fingerlings were released into the river during the event, aimed at boosting fish production and restoring aquatic biodiversity, a DIPR report stated.
Addressing the gathering, director of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Rongsennungba, emphasized the department’s continued efforts to promote and develop the fisheries sector in the state despite limited resources. He called on the host village of Longsa and neighboring villages– Mi-long, Chubayimkum, and Moalenden– to protect the river’s aquatic ecosystem by enforcing a total ban on fishing during breeding seasons.
He urged the village councils to frame and implement strict rules, stressing that only traditional fishing methods should be permitted in the future, if at all. “What we preserve today is for posterity,” the director reminded, while thanking the participating villages, departmental officers, and stakeholders for their cooperation in making the programme successful.
Short speeches were also delivered by Bendang Tatar on behalf of Longsa Village Council, joint director of SARS Lipokonen Jamir; joint director Fisheries & AR, Ketusielie Angami; BDO Kazupokba and representatives from Milong, Chubayimkum, and Moalenden village councils.
The programme was chaired by deputy director Fisheries & AR, Dr. Rongsenkumzuk.
